lThe leaves tremble, then the branches diverge. Ten meters above the ground and at a decent distance from the observation deck for visitors, a timid plush muzzle appears. Seduced by the smell, the red panda, a new inhabitant of the zoological reserve of Calviac-en-Périgord (Dordogne), emerges from his apathy and heads for a bowl of food standing on the roof of one of his huts.

Emmanuel Mouton, creator of the Noé of this Arche in Périgord noir, is delighted with this new reserved space, giving pride of place to a biogeographical zone not yet represented in Calviac, a zone of tropical Asia. Sano Ago, a one-year-old boy from Nepal, was born in a Hungarian park. “This is a stuffed animal. He is very affectionate, not aggressive,” says the head of the zoological reserve.

“Critical Hazard”

Like all residents of Calviac, his species is in “critical danger” and is on the red list of persons to be protected. Fewer than 10,000 individuals will remain in the wild, and the population continues to decline, in part due to habitat fragmentation.

Arriving on June 17, Sano Ago gradually acclimates to its new environment and, despite its shyness, develops more and more under the close attention of visitors and its caretaker, Romain Dieuda. “We didn’t see him for the first four days,” he describes. He is very shy. The red panda has a very slow metabolism. He eats and sleeps a lot and for a long time. This is a separate family, cousins of the raccoon and mongoose, which are called the red panda because of the resemblance to the panda and the taste of bamboo.

With its waddling appearance of a mini bear carved from sloth and fox, the red panda has quickly become a favorite with visitors. “People are hyperactive. In the store, the kids want stuffed pandas and otters. »

Indeed, the very wise Sano Ago was installed in a huge paddock where gluttons used to live. If it is rather solitary, nocturnal and arboreal, then, on the other hand, at its feet a fellow of five restless Asiatic otters provides a spectacle, galloping, playing, swimming … Arrived 30 June and placed in an aviary 5 July. , they immediately took their scores.

While the European otter can reach 10 kg, the Asian otter, also called the pygmy otter or gray otter, weighs only 3 to 4 kg. It actively develops on land and feeds in water. The ideal time to watch the red panda is in the morning, before the heat sets in. During the day, he would rather take a nap and settle in the trees. You can also come during the feeding time at 14:15. From 10:30 to 17:30, various feedings take place every half an hour, except for the lunch break.
