New action movie from Hulu Princess, which premieres on July 1, eschews traditional Disney storytelling and damsel-in-distress imagery to present a fast-paced, uncompromising tale of one woman’s struggle for freedom. Joey King (from the hit Netflix series kissing booth franchise) plays the eponymous princess who must save her kingdom from an evil future husband.
With not only Princess but also this year high speed train to her credit, King is quickly becoming a fan of action movies. With a director like Le-Van Kiet (Anger as well as Shark), watching her progress, it’s no wonder she was able to go from rookie to expert throughout the movie. Other cast members include Dominic Cooper (preacher) in the role of the evil lord, sitting on the throne, Olga Kurylenko (Black Widow) as his right hand, and Veronica Ngo (old guard) as Princess Lin’s tutor.
Screen ranting talked to King about how Princess was her training ground for action scenes, the collaborative relationship she had with Costa Veronica Hgo, and her excitement about upcoming projects.
Screen speed: I like how Princess just throws you into the thick of things right from the start and you don’t have time to catch your breath. How are you preparing for this?
Joey King: Yes, it’s true! How are you preparing for this? It wasn’t easy. I have never done anything like this. Before that, I had no combat training, so I really jumped head first. I had amazing coaches. I started training in Los Angeles and then went to Bulgaria to train with the whole Bulgarian stunt team.
It was so wonderful to work with people who made me feel so empowered. Because I knew that when I started it, I wanted to get to a place where I could do most of the stunts and fight scenes myself. Because it only makes it more authentic. It adds your own style; your own personality. After all, I was playing a princess, so I wanted to be able to live in it and really work hard.
Everyone was so supportive and I’m proud to say that I was able to do 85-90% of what you see on screen.
It’s incredible. How much of it was about your scenes with Lin, what moments in the film do I like the most? It’s so nice to see this as a workout dynamic and it feels like there’s so much left unsaid between them. Can you tell us about working with Veronica? [Ngo]?
Joey King: Veronica is amazing. She has an amazing fighting style. I have learned so much from her and I admire her so much.
She was actually a little late for the production, so I remember when she arrived. I’ve been practicing for a while now; we had already started filming and I was so nervous because I admired his fighting style so much. And I just wanted her to think that I was good enough. She was so helpful and she was amazingly impressed with my fights. I was so happy about it. We had a great time because we trained together, filmed together and got close.
I also love that she is my mentor in the film, but we both have completely different fighting styles. And I love that because it just shows that the princess is inspired by Lin, but she’s on her own. And Lin wants the princess to be herself. I like their dynamics. Nicely.
You have so much ahead of you, between this and high speed train as well as Hamster and Gretelwhich I am very happy about.
Joey King: Actually, me too! Thank you.
Can you tell us how fun it is to do all these different things?
Joey King: It’s so much fun! By the way, “Hamster and Gretel” was great. Because for the past year, on top of everything I’ve done, I’ve had to find time to record sessions for Hamster & Gretel; between these little pockets of time that I have, which was such a nice change of pace. I love this show. It’s fun.
What about shooting a bullet train? My God, how do you even sum up this experience? Looks like… Was it even me? I must have been the killer in an action movie with Brad Pitt filmed in Los Angeles and played a cool character. It’s just bigger than life. I can’t believe I got to be a part of this and I’m just enjoying all these really cool milestones.
