Automotive. Faced with Toyota Aygo X, two headscarf-wearing rivals

The new Aygo is now a small SUV. Following the termination of an agreement with Stellantis to manufacture the C1/108/Aygo mini city car, Toyota has opted for an SUV format for the production of its new small city car.

Winning formula as all manufacturers use this recipe. To cut down on investment, Toyota is using the Yaris platform, which guarantees good habitability with its 2.43m wheelbase.

The balance length of 3.70 m with a width of 1.74 m and a height of 1.525 m is due to a ground clearance of 14.6 cm.

The presentation of the interior is modern and quite cheerful. In terms of multimedia, you must opt for the Dynamic trim to take advantage of the 7-inch multimedia screen. The Active comes with a 4″ bezel. For a 9-inch screen, this is the Collection trim. Toyota photo

One engine and five finishes

The Aygo X features a 72bhp 1-litre VVT-i, with power sent through a manual or CVT transmission not offered in the entry-level Active. A trim that already includes plenty of security systems and manually controlled air-conditioning, but doesn’t add up much from €15,990.

The second level, Dynamic, includes everything you need for 1000 euros better. Three superb trims (Design, Collection and Air limited) offer nice finishes but high prices for mini cars: €19,690 or €22,990 for a limited edition.

Few competitors ahead

Not so long ago, small city cars fought back, offering low volume and price-cutting, like the Kia Picanto, which disappeared from catalogs.

This was before pollution control standards forced manufacturers to meet draconian standards or go 100% electric. Only the Fiat Panda City Cross and Suzuki Ignis remained in the category.

Panda cross from 15,290 euros.

At this price, the Panda is offered with a 70 hp micro-hybrid engine. On a base older than Aygo, it is placed on a platform 2.30 m long. With the same length as Aygo, Panda is already 7 cm and taller (1.66 m). It also displays the adventurer’s look, but in an older style.

The Panda has a 7-inch infotainment system (like the Aygo X) and a similar trunk. The advantage over the Aygo is the 85 hp 4×4 version that can get out of bad off-road. Too bad, the price reaches 20,490 €. The Panda, which uses the same chassis as the 500 model, benefits from easy city driving thanks to City steering assistance.

The Ignis offers the perfect riding position for city driving as it is elevated thanks to its high ground clearance of 18cm.

Suzuki Ignis, from 13,590 euros

Suzuki changed the styling of the Ignis a bit. A small city car with a length of 3.70 m, which could already count on a pleasant design. The Ignis has the most power with its 83bhp 1.2L, which also benefits from microhybridization.

The three-finish range (Avantage, Privilege and Pack) includes manual, CVT and 2- or 4-wheel drive versions; it costs up to 19,660 euros, not counting a few options. The LLD offer for 37 months offers it from 12,090 euros minus the conversion premium. Ground clearance of 18 cm makes it a real urban mini-SUV.

Smarter than Aygo X

More livable than the Aygo, with a larger boot (260 liters) and a neater entry-level presentation, the Ignis also has a 7-inch multimedia device at just the right height.

The Ignis also benefits from a large roof protection (1.69m high) and interesting modularity. From the second trim level, a retractable bench (50/50) allows you to choose between luggage space and habitability. On the other hand, we may regret that the direction is not accurate enough or not informative enough.
